Halloween is awesome

I love little kids. Nothing is better than little kids acting shy in costumes, asking you for candy. The only disappointment that we had for the night is that we only had about 20 kids or so. We probably could've had more, but I gave one kid the thrill of his night by dumping the rest of our candy into his bucket. It was late, and our doorbell wasn't ringing frequently anymore, so I thought, why not?Costume award winner at the 436: Kid that came in a paper Valentino's hat and apron with blood over everything. Just very creative. Maybe he had a bad experience there....
Best would-be costume winner: Adam dressing up like a ninja.

What the hell is wrong with Mel?
Apparently Mel Gibson donated 2 million dollars to Mexican President Vicente Fox to help with relief efforts after the damage was done with hurricane Katrina. He did all of that without wearing a pair of socks during the whole time he spoke with el Presidente. Ok, that's great and all, but seriously, was Mel hanging out with his terrorist buddies at Guantanamo Bay for the last 2 years? Or is he just working on his new movie: "Passion of the Hussein"?
Sweep on the South Side
What a series. I don't think there is a team more fun to watch than the White Sox were in the postseason this year. It also helps that I was rooting for them in every series because:1) I hate the bandwagon Red Sox fans, and were glad they got rid of them early.
2) Almost half of ESPN's analysts picked the Angels to win it all.
3) The White Sox took full control against the 'stros who knocked out the Braves again this year. And also, the 'stros were the other half of the ESPN analysts picks to win it all.
4) Nobody thought the Sox should be in postseason to begin with, especially this guy.
4) This really gives a lot of hope to this guy.
Only good news with baseball being over, is that hopefully I'll get to watch the awards fly in during the offseason:
Hank Aaron award: Andruw Jones
Roberto Clemente award: John Smoltz
MVP: Andruw Jones
Rookie of the Year: Jeff Francoeur
Manager of the Year: Bobby Cox

I guess I'm some kind of big deal: [link to big deal]
If you know German, #2 is the best one on the list! And for some weird reason, this seems like a strange list that Greg could've put together in like 2 minutes. That could be some sort of conspiracy theory ... Greg Williams is the one behind googlisms ...
[See how big of a deal you are!]

I went in after 8.5 hours of work today to meet with my advisor. I figured Thursday was a good day since registration starts on Monday. I was enlightened to find out that I only have 24 or 25 (depending on which bulletin I use) hours left at this fine University (also assuming I pass every class that I am currently taking). This means that I can average two semesters of 12 hours a piece. This will come in very handy in the spring when I have to travel for baseball almost every other weekend. This is also very handy because I know with nothing else going on in the fall, I can concentrate directly on graduating (that, and playing a 5th year of fall ball). The nice thing about all of my 24 remaining hours is that 9 of them are humanity classes (e.g. history, philosophy, history of rock 'n roll, etc.). This means that after this semester, I will only have 13 remaining credit hours that really count towards my major and how I will be applying my life after college!

XP > Tiger
Oct 14, 2005
Ok, so most of you know the little situation that I created these past few days. On Thursday morning at work, I got most of the stuff done that I needed to, so I updated Tiger (10.4) on our Server computer that was running (10.3.8). Upon doing so, I crashed the Server when it loaded Tiger. It took me until 2:00 p.m. today to fix the problem (thank goodness that I took a Unix class here at the University!). In a nutshell, here's what went wrong:When Mac's upgrade from 10.3.x to 10.4.x, they do something incredibly stupid. Instead of just writing new files, it goes through and changes critical file names (i.e. our Apache Server configuration file). It changed the word `rendevous` to `bonjour`. So, our server was looking for these `rendevous` files that didn't exist anymore.
Why XP > Tiger:
1) XP wouldn't have changed configuration files like that. It's smart enough to leave stuff like that alone, and not mess with it. Plus, I had to use the Terminal on the G5, and access the root files for the computer (not a good idea unless you really know what you're doing).
2) XP has a great feature called "System Restore". It has the ability to reconfigure your computer, and have it run exactly as it did a day ago, a week ago, a month ago... you get the picture. So, if we were running on a Windows system, we could've easily adverted the problem when it came about.
Bad news: My boss Tom said he would buy our old server guy (Ray) an iPod Nano if he came in and fixed it. Well, he hasn't extended that to me yet, so I'll just keep my fingers crossed.
Fall Break
Oct 11, 2005
First, I have to survive the rest of the week, and get all of my stuff done so that I can celebrate fall break. I still have a test to take, components to make for a computer processor, and a homework due. Then we're goin' to hopefully get enough people to come over to our place to watch the Husker-Baylor game (to help pay for the pay-per-view), and then I'll be off to Kansas City (fall break fall-back location).Early last week, Ben told me that CVK had a vision of driving down to Waco to watch the game in person. I'm sure a ticket down there is cheaper than paying to watch it on TV. So we kind of had this hope that we would make it down there, but it didn't pan out.
Today option #2 came about. Christi, Donna, mom and I are driving down to Kansas City on Monday to look at Christi try on wedding dresses. I know, I know.... everyone is thinking, "wow... what a fun filled fall break Helge...." But it will be fun. It's goin' to be great to see my babe happy and very excited, and it will be fun for the four of us to take a day off and just have fun in a place other than Lincoln or Omaha and relax. Here's what came about:

I can't believe it. I spent 6+ hours watchin' the Braves lose in an 18 INNING GAME! Here's how my productivity went for getting my homework done (in homework percentage/innings of the game):
Yesterday
Well, #2 and #3 didn't pan out, but #1 turned out good, and #4 couldn't have been any better! What a Day
Oct 8, 2005
Things to do today:1) Host another rockin' House-gate party at the 436
2) Watch the Huskers take over TTech and move into the top 25
3) Have the Braves win a pivotal game 3 in Houston
4) End with a nightcap: Dinner and relaxation time with Christi as we celebrate our 5th Anniversary tonight
Chef a la Helge
Oct 6, 2005
Maybe I'm in the wrong field, or maybe I just need to hang out with my uncle Bill more often. Last night, on a whim, I decided to make a new meal for Christi and I. I made a breaded chicken dish on just pure assumption that my ideals would work. They worked alright, and the chicken was amazing. Once again, I think this is going to throw me into a cooking phase where the next item on the menu is chili (once we reach a temperature below 50 degrees). Looks like that might not be for a while, so I'll try to make some other things in the mean time. Suggestions are always welcome. Just be sure to tell me, and come over and eat once it's done.
Not again...

Braves lose game 1 ... toy with my playoff emotions once again.
College Football Award Time (Week 5)
Oct 2, 2005
Upset of the day: Michigan over Michigan State. I'm still surprised every year that these two teams don't play on Week 13. It looked like this was the year that the Spartans were going to capitalize, and send the Michigan fans into a season long panic. Don't even begin to tell me that Florida losing was a bigger upset. We all know that they are overrated, and Chris Leak is horrible.Heisman Disappointment: After gaining the props award last week, Maroney couldn't do anything against the feisty Penn State defense on Saturday. He had a very horrible 48 yards on 16 carries.
Heisman Props: Reggie Bush. No doubt about it. Bush had 158 yards on the ground, scoring twice and almost averaged a first down every time that he carried the ball.
Heisman Watch: Brady Quinn. The Irish relied heavily on Quinn as he threw for 440 yards and 3 touchdowns to improve Notre Dame to 4-1. He could just be the guy to knock off the Trojans at home since Sam Keller & Co. just couldn't get the job done.
Biggest Disappointment: (tie) There weren't more people at our "House-Gate" before the game. We had a good turnout (8 people), but it could've been a lot better if everyone was at the house. Adam: I hope you had a good time in Lawrence, because we sure had a good time here.
Biggest Disappointment: (tie) Brian Helge for not catching the Hot Dog that was shot out of Der Wiener Schlinger. I looked up, and the guy right in front of me caught it, and I had my hand directly below his, with my thumb grippin' the 'dog.
