Haunted House = Haunted Hoax

Oct 31, 2006
Last night Zach, Jake and I went to the "scariest" haunted house in town. It was on 16th and "O" and it was not that good. It wasn't bad, but it surely wasn't good. They had a whole resident-evil-zombies-are-taking-over-the-hospital theme that they carried throughout it. It was good that they had a nice story line, but the thrill just wasn't there. Just a bunch of cheap scares with people jumping out of dark corners.

I remember when my parents used to put on haunted houses in Seward for the Optimist club. They bought a house that they decked out and it was one of the biggest things to do (hey, I know it's a small town, but it was awesome). They put much more thought into everything and it was extremely elaborate. I even think the price was cut in half as well. I guess those were the good ol' days growing up.

As for tonight we got about 40-50 kids to come trick-or-treat at the 436. It's a new record surprisingly since the weather was at a record low for the last 3 years. I'll leave you with two of the best costumes that I saw this year. Cloud Strife & Chocobo on the top (Final Fantasy 7) and the creepy little guy from the Saw movies on the bottom.

Hey .... what happened?

Welcome to brianhelge.com 4.0. There's nothing like going through 4 versions in a year and a half. I've been really bored with my previous designs, but I'm thinking that this one might stick around for quite some time. That's because I absolutely love it and because it took forever to get all of my PHP scripting to work out the way that I wanted it to.

If you still want to see the old version, it's up on my css reboot page. I know I'm one day early for the 'boot, but someone has to be home to pass out candy to the little kids at the 436 tonight.

Let me know what you think about the new look. Here's to a new beginning for brianhelge.com. Cheers.

Saw 3 and how cool Moz' and Google are

Oct 28, 2006

Last night the roommates and I went on to see the final chapter of the Saw series (well at least that's what they say ....) and it was awesome. They did a great job of tying everything together when ending the masterpiece.

If your name is not Ben VanKat, I would advise you to go see it, and make sure that you watch the first two as well.

There has been some enormous web news happening in the past few days as well. Internet Explorer has just released the much needed version 7, and Mozilla has released FireFox 2.0. This is awesome because I might once again start to like IE (well, that's probably a lie). The very, very nice thing that they changed was that their browser is now W3C compatible for web sites (views them how FireFox views them).

I did find out that Mozilla is awesome because it was the first to set the standard, and it was also the first to grab this web site: http://www.ie7.com.

As for the Google part of the blog title, there's really no new news here. Google is awesome and everyone should know that. The part that I'm talking about is their feeds that they have in gmail. At the top of all of the pages, they have the newest feeds from sports, weather, news, etc. except for on their spam page. On these pages, they have feeds to recipe web sites for different foods to make with spam. If you have a gmail account, go check it out.

The last bit of news is that brianhelge.com version 4.0 is about to get unleashed here very shortly. This could happen tonight if enough people have their fingers crossed. I guess that's my excuse for not posting any blogs since I came back from seeing my babe in Colorado.

Where the beer flows like wine ...

Oct 16, 2006

This is the view that Christi told me that I missed by about two weeks. She went to Aspen at the beginning of October and said that the aspen trees there were a highlight yellow, so I was absolutely pumped to go. So we get there, and there are about 5 trees that look like this in the whole town. But, considering that we were in Aspen, it really didn't matter. The town is awesome. I just can't wait until the mountains get a little more snow on them and we can go stock up on some winter gear and go skiing.

If anyone who's reading this has a chance to visit, make sure that you go to the J Bar and get an Aspen Crud. It's quite delicious.

Also around the country, I heard that Steph is on a quest to bring back that VanKat guy to Nebraska. Talking about Nebraska, back home, Zach apparently rocked the MCAT that he took in August. Many beers will be flowing when I see him next. Props Martens, UNMC is right around the corner!

Take off your helmet and go whackin'

Oct 15, 2006
Everyone gets a thrill every week during the baseball season when brawls break out. In the fighting world, I'm not sure if there is anything more exciting watching the bullpen sprint in to get in on the action. Hockey seems to have fights every 5 minutes. If they didn't, it'd be really tough for people to watch it. Sports fans even got a treat when the Pacers visited Detroit last year.

But it's rare, very rare to see football players get in a tussle. So, we were blessed that the great University of Miami (FL) was able to just let loose and give people like me something to blog about. There's nothing like getting in a brawl with the Florida International Golden Panthers. Yes, the national champions, 5 years removed, began to tussle with the 0-7 Golden Panthers. They got in a fight with a team who's mascot is the Golden Panthers.

Nice work Miami. The best is that when it's all over, they raise their helmets in the air as if they have won some ultimate battle.

Great job coaching your players Coker. I'll be checking on monster.com for your job posting later this week.

Long Wait to Denver

Oct 14, 2006
Today was a very eventful day at the Omaha airport. First off, I leave early enough to try to avoid the early 4 p.m. traffic on Friday's. As I'm driving towards Omaha, the I-80 rush begins to pick up around exit 440 as would be expected. Although, as I continue on, I drove by the new Cabela's that they are putting up in LaVista. HOLY CRAP! It's huge. It kind of makes the drive between Lincoln and Omaha worth while.

There I am driving along merging through traffic all of the way to the airport when traffic almost comes to a stand still near downtown. After we all get out and push our cars along, I finally make it to Eppley. Because I thought the traffic would be a mimic of a cluster at Times Square, I got to the airport about two hours early. Whoops. Nothing more fun than sitting in airports ...

Good thing I have my laptop, but bad thing that Omaha makes you pay to use their internet. I guess they aren't making enough on the overpriced cinnamon rolls and pizza slices. I found a couple of people who have a P2P set up, and I tried to connect, but it was to no avail. That wasn't the bad part though. It was the other people here sitting with me. As I sit down, there are two people decked out in their Creighton gear: one guy and one girl. The guy is wearing the most Creighton Prep-ish attire that you could possibly imagine, and the girl was surely digging it. No more than 5 minutes later, 2 girls form the Creighton Crew team sit down and then they all notice they are from Creighton because it is written all over their clothes. Then out of no where, there are 3 more behind me. It's a little Creighton Prep reunion. Boom. Here come two more walking billboards into our section. None of these people know that they are on the same flight, but apparently the school must've had a deal with United Flight 461. This is sure scary. I guess it is Friday the 13th, so that probably makes sense for most of this.

After hearing 'Creighton Prep this' and 'Creighton Prep that' I couldn't take it anymore and I navigated my way to the bar. Not to fly like Uncle Bill, but to watch the A's - Tigers game. Baseball saves me once again. Is there a better sport out there? Um, no. No, there's not.

I'm sitting here right now writing this post in TextPad and hoping that my plane comes to the gate so I can just get to Denver and maybe publish this sometime later on today. The color blue is slowly taking over gate B13 as the departure time nears. I'm just crossing my fingers that the person sitting next to me is wearing a "Restore the Order" t-shirt instead of Nate Funk jersey.

Here's for hoping ...

Make Love, Not Warcraft

Oct 9, 2006

Zach made me watch this on Comedy Central the other night. If you have 20 minutes free in life (which somehow I had to make time for), please watch this. I think this episode was even funnier to me because I know a good handful of people that this really fits the mold for. Not for how they look or anything, but just the style of play and how they talk.

Great episode. Keep it up Matt and Trey.

No Posts Lately

Oct 8, 2006
I'm very sorry that no posts have been put up lately. I promise that they will start rolling here in another week or so. I'm extremely close to getting v4.0 up and rolling, so that's exciting, but taking a shade longer than expected. adamstoll.net and healthpro connections have been taking up my time and limiting some posts. Yes mom and dad, I'm sure I've done some school work in the last week or so to keep myself busy as well.

Friday was awesome. AO called me up, and we went to the Lincoln Stars vs. Omaha Lancers season opener. This was the first game that I've ever been to. I've had so many people tell me how fun they are and how crazy people get, so it was good that I went out and experienced it.

The atmosphere is pretty insane. You'd think for a purely football dominated state that no one would care too much about hockey, but there are some people there who lose their minds during the game. I guess $5 beer and people walking through the aisles while the puck is in play is enough to drop the f-bomb these days.

There was a lot that I found out too. I know most of the hockey rules, so it wasn't anything like that, but it was more about the actual team. They're high schoolers! I thought these were guys out of college, but everyone one of them are 15 or 16 years old. Apparently these kids come to Lincoln to go to high school just to play for the Stars so they can land a good scholarship to a college. With them being highschoolers, it's amazing how many people in the stands cuss and drop the f-bomb (yeah, those $5 beers probably come back into play).

I also love the jerseys. It seemed like I was the only one in the place without a jersey. But these just aren't your run of the mill, I'll go out and just get myself something to blend in jerseys, people customize the crap out of them. Every person has a name on the back but it's not just their last name. They try to come up with cool names like "Bead Man", "Krazy Karl", "Fun Guy", "Chomp" and my personal favorite "Wignut."

Anyways, to sum up, it was very cool. The Stars winning 7-1 also helps out a little.

Besides that, the Husker defense showed up. Hopefully they can tweak stuff out one more week and then be ready for Texas. Oh yeah, how fun is it to watch this happen this year?

Christi and I are celebrating 6 great years today. This will be the end of a streak until we start a new one in April. Cheers.

Crazy.

Here's a home tape that was recorded on 9/11/01 and released on 9/11/06. It's an amazing view from the north, and it really adds a perspective to what happened on that day. The sound from all of the firetrucks is the most shocking.

Wow.

Well, a win's a win.

I've never seen someone outplay the other team for only 1 quarter and come away with the win. I've also never seen our defensive front four dominated on EVERY SINGLE SNAP. We'll take the win and become one win closer to being bowl eligible.

Just a couple of days ago, I told Ponec that these blowouts at home were getting boring. I told him that I wanted a game like Pittsburgh or Iowa State from last year. I guess sometimes you get what you wish for.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. I never watched the Smurf's as a kid, so someone might have to help me out here. Was there a fat smurf? If not, I'm pretty sure that Mangino would fill the role perfectly.

Sorry for no posts in a while. I'm desperately trying to get my v4.0 up, Adam's site completely finished and another freelance job that I got hooked up with. 12 more days until I'm in Colorado as well ....
