Blizzard in June

omaha hail storm june 2008

There's nothing quite like winding down at work on a Friday and then running for cover as hail hits the exterior glass of your workplace at 90-100 mph. At one point, it's not really that big of a surprise that a huge storm blew through town (again) this year, but on the flip side, how often do you see hail at the end of June?

Danny Nee Hall of Fame
I saw this article last night and couldn't believe that it was real. It wasn't until later today that mom emailed me and reminded me.

Danny Nee is going to be inducted into the Nebraska Basketball Hall of Fame. Danny Nee people! I know that he's the winningest coach in school history, but coming from Nebraska, that's really no great feat.

Don't get me wrong. I love the guy to death, but never in my wildest dreams did I think he'd be inducted to the Nebraska Basketball HOF. Or any HOF for that matter. I was lucky enough to go to a ton of games growing up and watched Nee at every chance I got. I was probably one of only a few people that liked him (even if it were for the wrong reasons) at the Bob.

I always joked with my parents that one day they will rename the floor to the "Danny Nee Court." Now, the process is in motion and it just may be a matter of time. Those autographs that I wrote about a while ago might actually be worth more than the paper they were scribbled on. Well, not really.

Danny Nee is phase 1. Phase 2 will be complete when Jaron Boone gets his acceptance letter to join this elite club.

A week full of our favorite pastime

No matter what is going on with our lives or how far apart we live, whenever the Cubs and Braves begin their regular three game series, it gives Drew and I a chance to talk and catch up. If you think about it, it's quite amazing that a simple baseball game will remind us that we haven't followed up with each other in a while and that a phone call is well overdue. The feeling of watching your phone ring after your team has just been swept isn't the call you're excited to take, but I knew it was coming and I knew I'd be the one starting the call if the tables were turned.

This brings us to this weekend where Matt Sage had one of the greatest ideas ever: have your bachelor party in Omaha during the College World Series. His wedding was at a perfect time and Omaha was a central location for everyone that attended.

What makes it even better was sitting through the 4+ hour opening game and watching Stanford explode for 11 runs in the top of the ninth inning. I felt bad for FSU because I know how hard it is to come back from at least 5 runs in the last inning.

It was a great weekend and my hat is off to Sage for coming up with a great idea and setting the bar high for anyone else to follow.

Stanley's eye became infected over the weekend, turned red and began to puss up a little bit. This happened about a week earlier and he slept it off and was fine in the morning. After we tried our cheap remedy again on Saturday night, we awoke on Sunday to find him in even worse shape. As luck would have it, our vet wasn't open until Monday.

So Stan waited patiently in his kennel all day to go see the doc after Christi got off work. We were both shocked to find out that he had a thorn in his eye. We just played it off to allergies or getting some dirt in it outside.

Christi was fortunate enough to work from home today as she took Stan to the animal eye specialist. Want to know how sweet of a job this really is? She told Christi that she did cataract surgery on a penguin a week ago. Long story short, the thorn was stuck in the first part of his retina and Stan had to be sedated to have it surgically removed. I haven't even gone under the knife. Ever.

This means that Stan did something in his short 8 month old life that I actually hope I never have to do. So how good of a gig is it being an animal eye specialist? Let's just say that we could've bought another Stanley and had some money left over.
